Introduction: Reality vs. The Vision

If there’s one thing Larry and I have learned while building our forever home, it’s that a custom build is essentially a long series of pivots. We’ve had our fair share of miscommunications, but nothing quite prepared us for our “Sunday afternoon surprise.”

As we walked up to the site this weekend, we were expecting to see the warm Special Walnut stain I’ve been dreaming of for our front doors. Instead, we were greeted by raw, bright Red Mahogany. My heart sank! It wasn’t just a shade off; it was the exact color we had explicitly cleared with our project manager back in February.

The Fixing Phase

Luckily, the painter hadn’t sealed the door yet, but seeing that bright red pigment settle into the wood grain was a shock to the system. We had a long conversation with the crew, and thankfully, the painter was incredibly professional. He’s currently in the process of sanding those doors back down to the bare wood so we can start over with the Special Walnut. He even showed us a photo of a job he just finished in that exact stain—and let me tell you, it is the classic, medium-brown perfection I’ve been picturing for this house.

It was a frustrating day, but we’re so grateful to have a crew willing to make it right. It’s a reminder that even when things go sideways, honest communication is the best tool on the job site.

The Waiting Game

On top of the stain drama, we’re back in the “hurry up and wait” cycle. Our interior doors and casings, which were promised last week, are officially a no-show. This has a bit of a domino effect: the painters really need that trim to be installed before they can finish up the final look of the whole house.

If this is your first time building a home, take this advice from me: Learn to embrace flexibility. You will have days where the schedule falls apart, and you will have moments where the end result feels a world away. But the goal isn’t a perfect process—it’s a perfect home. We’re holding out for those doors, keeping our eyes on the 50-year vision, and trusting that the hiccups won’t matter once we’re moved in and hanging those stockings on the mantle.
