The Waiting Game

Building a custom house gives you a front-row seat to the magic, but it also means experiencing the challenges of a construction schedule. We use a builder portal through The Barndo Co. to track our scope of work, which is fantastic for transparency—but it can be frustrating to know exactly what the “next step” is and then find yourself playing the waiting game. We spent several weeks watching the calendar, waiting for the electrical team to arrive.

It was a lesson in reality: custom builds run on their own rhythm, and “good” pros are always in high demand. When the electrician finally arrived, he started solo, but eventually brought in a full crew to get the job done. Now, we’re just waiting for that final inspection to pass so we can keep moving forward!

Why You Can’t Rush the Electrical Plan

If there is one piece of advice we can give anyone building a home, it’s this: Think about how you actually live your life. We spent months researching the placement of every single receptacle, switch, and light. It sounds tedious, but it’s the only way to avoid the “extension cord clutter” that plagues so many new homes.

Our Room-by-Room Strategy

• The Bedroom: We made sure there are outlets on either side of the bed for lamps and chargers, plus wiring for a TV on the opposite wall. And a fun addition? Outlets inside the master closet for a future makeup vanity!
• The Kitchen & Scullery: We prioritized under-cabinet lighting for that beautiful, warm glow. In the scullery, we added extra outlets specifically for our heavy-duty canning pots and a future coffee bar.
• The Living Room: We opted for floor outlets under the sectional. This allows us to power our furniture without having cords snaking across the rug. We also added outlets flanking the fireplace to ensure our lamps are exactly where they need to be.
• The Garage Workshop: This is the heart of our homestead! We added dedicated circuits for our two freezers and Larry’s tool bench. I also made sure there were outlets specifically for our furniture refinishing projects. A clever tip we tried? We added high-mounted outlets in the corners for oscillating fans—a total game-changer for moving air during our hot summer days.
• The “Must-Have” Safety Add-on: Perhaps the most important decision we made was installing a 30-amp generator connection on the back porch. Living in an area prone to severe weather, this gives us the peace of mind that we can keep our fridge and freezers running no matter what the storm brings.

A Final Ward of Advice

Don’t just glance at your blueprints. Walk the rooms. Mimic your daily routine: Where do I plug in my phone? Where does the vacuum go? Where will the grandbabies need a nightlight? It is 100 times easier—and cheaper—to move a box during framing than to regret a missing outlet once the drywall is finished.
