Living in our tiny home for the past five years has been a blessing for my husband, Larry, and me. However, as our five adult children have married and started families of their own, we quickly outgrew our space. This led us to build our dream home—a transition that also allows us to move my aging parents into our tiny home where we can help care for them.

Because cooking, baking, canning, and preserving are vital to our family, we knew our new kitchen had to be highly functional. We worked with our architect to design a separate scullery specifically to accommodate large-batch cooking and canning. This room is a dream come true. It features two pantries flanking a central coffee bar, a full run of lower cabinets with open shelving above—which gives us the height needed to operate our canners—and a large sink for washing jars and bathing our fur babies. We also included a stackable laundry center and a mudroom-style bench with hooks for shoes and coats. Best of all, the doorway leads directly into the garage, making grocery unloading effortless.

Organization is key to efficiency. By moving heavy prep work and canning to the scullery, our main kitchen remains a clean, open space dedicated to hosting our large family. We designed the layout to include a dining table and a large island with plenty of seating so that our children, their spouses, and their families can all gather at once.
To keep the scullery functional, we utilized deep drawers for baking supplies and staples. We’ve also relied on these larger canisters and smaller canisters, which have been a lifesaver in our tiny home. They are stackable, feature writeable labels, and keep our flour, sugar, pasta, and snacks perfectly organized. When you are working with limited space, every inch matters, so these are a must-have for our new build.

Moving the coffee station to the scullery keeps our main kitchen countertops clutter-free. With a dedicated drawer underneath for coffees, teas, and accessories, everything stays tidy and out of sight. We also opted to place our microwave in the scullery, designating a specific spot for it to ensure the main kitchen remains the heart of our hospitality.
Incorporating laundry into the scullery required careful planning. We’ve been using the LG ThinQ stackable laundry center for five years and couldn’t be happier with it; it handles large items like comforters and washable rugs with ease. Naturally, we are installing the same unit in our new home.
We are so excited to have more room to grow. We know that maintaining this space requires discipline to prevent clutter, but with an intentional layout, we are confident the scullery will quickly become the hardest-working room in our house.
