Flashlights at 9 PM: Our Countertop Installation Drama (And What We Learned)

Introduction: The Evening Installation

When you live right on your build property, you never really “clock out.” At 7:30 PM one evening, we noticed the countertop installation crew had finally arrived. They were set to install our brand-new quartz counters in the kitchen, on the island, and in both bathrooms. Larry made a beeline over there to talk with them, especially about the sink clips. We had ordered a heavy-duty single granite sink—the same kind we’ve had in a previous home and absolutely loved—and because of its weight, it requires special hardware to make sure it stays securely attached.

For the countertops, we decided to splurge a little on an upgrade: Carrara Gold Quartz. It has a bright white background with delicate gold veining running through it. One of our biggest design rules for this house was no gray tones. We wanted everything to feel warm, and these counters were the missing puzzle piece that beautifully bridges our creamy beige perimeter cabinets and that dark Hatteras navy island.

Now, the paint crew has to come back in to patch up a few scuffs on the walls, and we’re right back on track. But let me tell you, these are the real-life headaches of building custom.

If there is one thing we want to pass on to you, it’s this: Be thorough, stay on top of your contractors, and keep the lines of communication wide open with your project manager. Mistakes happen, but catching them early (even with a flashlight at 9 PM!) saves so much heartache down the road. We are praying that as we inch closer to the finish line, the hiccups get fewer and farther between—but until then, we’re keeping our eyes open and our boots ready!
